John R. Knights

1929-2013 Mr. John R. Knights, 83, a resident of Grandview Street, Bennington, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a brief illness.

Born in Catskill, NY August 22, 1929 he was the son of the late Morton S. and Theresa S. (Saxe) Knights.

John was a U.S. Army veteran having served with the Paratroopers from 1946 to 1948 and again during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1955.

Mr. Knights married the former Barbara Joyce Smith at the Methodist Church in Arlington, VT on October 9, 1954. Barbara died in 2004.

John was employed for many years as a butcher at the former Walker's Market on School Street and later for over thirteen years at the Grand Union in Bennington. He had more recently been employed at the Bennington Free Library until the time of his illness.

He was a member of the Stark Hose Company of the Bennington Fire Department.

An avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking in the Green Mountain National Forrest and his daily walks around town visiting with his many friends. He especially enjoyed good food and dining out with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his son, Bryan J. Knights of Bennington and his daughter and son-in-law, Ken and Pamela Weber of North Bennington; two grandchildren, Chad Weber and Adrianna Weber both of North Bennington; a brother and sister-in-law, Morton and Rosemarie Knights and a sister-in-law, Barbara Knights, all of Bennington; two sisters, Shirley Flanigan of Bennington and Joyce Deeter of Texas; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Knights was pre-deceased by a sister, Marion Dufrense and a brother, Leonard Knights.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 11:00 A.M.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery, Arlington, VT.

If friends desire contributions in memory of Mr. Knights may be made to either the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4 or to the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
