John "Mac" H. Maguire

1928 - 2014 BENNINGTON John "Mac" H. Maguire, 86, a resident of County Street, Bennington, died peacefully at the Vermont Veterans' Home on Dec. 20. Born on Mar. 26, 1928 in Bennington, he was the son of John Maguire and Mary (McGuire) Maguire. He received his early education in Bennington and was a World War II veteran, joining the navy as a 17 year old. In earlier years, John worked at Benmont Paper Company and for over thirty years was employed as a machinist at Bijur Lubricating Company, until his retirement. John was a member of the Elks, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. For decades he was a member of Stark Hose Fire Department in Bennington. John married the former Shirley F. Houran on Nov. 10, 1949. For the 53 years they were married, Shirley and Mac were inseparable, enjoying their annual trip to Maine, and spending quality time with family, especially grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. John was a talented craftsman and made a variety of gifts that are still found in many family homes. John enjoyed golfing and fishing and found great joy in watching his great-grandchildren fish at the Veterans' Home Fishing Derby this past fall. John is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Sue of North Bennington; and a son, Ronald, of Bennington; a grandson and wife, Chris and Lauren Maguire of Arlington, Vt.; and their children, Ella and Hogan Maguire; and a granddaughter, Kara Maguire, of Lafayette, Colo. John was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Houran) Maguire; a sister, Helen (Maguire) Jones; and a brother, Robert Maguire. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, Dec. 23, from 5 7 p.m. Members of the Bennington Elks Lodge are invited to meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. for a short service.
