Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- John Lovejoy Mason, 70, a resident of Middle Pownal Road in Pownal, died on Friday evening, Feb. 2, 2007, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a brief illness.

He was born in North Adams, Mass., on July 3, 1936, and was the son of the late John L. and Maude (Lincoln) Mason. He attended local schools and is a graduate of Williamstown High School. John married the former Helen Ankers in Williamstown on Feb. 16, 1957. Mrs. Mason died on May 18, 2000. He was employed as a salesman at Sears in Bennington. John had been employed in construction working with Fran Buck. He also worked in lawn care. He enjoyed mowing lawns, and landscaping. John was an avid gardener. Over the winter months he would do plowing.

Mr. Mason was member of the Pownal American Legion Post 90 of Pownal, The Mount Anthony Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons of Bennington, the Pownal Historical Society and was a former member of the Lions Club when they had a Pownal club. His other interest included tractor pulls where he had won several awards in different categories and classes of tractor. John also played the organ and enjoyed traveling, especially to Maine. He was a lover of all kinds of animals.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Joy Bull and her husband, Ronald, of Bennington, Ms. Jill Mason and her companion, Shelli Porter, of Pownal, and Mrs. Heidi Marsh and her husband, Michael, of Saratoga. N.Y.

He leaves three grandchildren, Ryan Bull and Zachary Bull, both of Bennington, and Haley Marsh of Saratoga, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning, Feb. 6, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street in Bennington with the Rev. Gary Dickson, pastor of the Pownal Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will take place in the spring in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery, in Pownal.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions for Mr. Mason may be made to the Shriner’s Childrens Hospital through the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, Vermont 05201.
