John Howard Nissen

John Howard Nissen, 69, of Manchester, died peacefully on Sunday, October 6, 2013, of prostate cancer. Son of the late Catherine Mullins and Hans Nissen, he graduated from Bergen Catholic High School in 1962, and earned a BA and MA from Providence College. John served as a college administrator at Dominican College, Lawrence University, Windham College, Marlboro College, the School for International Training, Bennington College, the International School of Geneva, Rhode Island College, the American University of Paris, NYU School of Dentistry, and Landmark College. In 1999, with colleagues and friends, he initiated Service Learning in Paris, a program which immersed high school students in language, culture, and service projects. John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Andersen; daughter, Erica Andersen-Nissen, husband Tom Nowak, and children Julien and Claire; son, Mark Andersen-Nissen, significant other Carolyn Davis; sister, Barbara Bartlett, husband Robin, and sons, Jason, Brendan, and Matthew; first cousins, Mary and Tom Murray; half-brother, Herbert; his well-loved mother-in-law, Virginia Andersen; and numerous in-laws. John will be remembered for his lifelong engagement with politics, history, religion, education, and mentoring of students and colleagues. John says he will see us all on the Day of Judgment, perhaps at the cafe across from the entrance to Chartres Cathedral. FUNERAL NOTICE: A mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Christ Our Savior Parish St. Paul Church, 398 Bonnet St., Manchester Center, VT 05255.
