John J. Ottaviano

1925 - 2013 BENNINGTON John J. Ottaviano, 87, a lifelong resident of Bennington, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at the Vermont Veterans Home.

Born in Bennington on Feb. 27, 1925, he was the son of John and Angelina (Schaldone) Ottaviano. He received his education in Bennington and was a member of the class of 1944 at Bennington High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, John served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the 162nd Infantry Regiment 41st Division.

For many years Mr. Ottaviano was employed at the former A&P Grocery Store from which he retired.

An avid golfer, John was a member of the Mount Anthony Country Club where he was a 5 time Club Champion. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling and in earlier years played softball. He served as Treasurer of the Eagle Hose of the Bennington Fire Department and was a Life Member of The Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567. John was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 307.

He married the former Lois Bellis at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on Sept. 18, 1948. Mrs. Ottaviano died on July 21, 2007.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Pierce and her husband, Edgar, of North Bennington, and Mary St. Peter and her husband, Richard, of Milford, N.H.; a son, John T. Ottaviano of Bennington; seven grandchildren, Zachary Pierce of Bennington, Nathan Pierce of Hawaii, Bethany Pierce of Charlottesville, Va., Megan E. Ablondi and her husband, Michael, of Brookline, N.H., Logan R. St. Peter and his wife. Kelly. of Williston, Vt., and John "Nick" Ottaviano and Ryan Ottaviano, both of Bennington; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Grace Albondi of Brookline, N.H. a sister, Lucina Barthelmas of Albany, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Guy Ottaviano, and by four sisters, Casprina Young, Mary Young, Marie Bealieu and Assunta "Sonny" Caslin.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday Feb. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. The Bennington Lodge of Elks Lodge # 567 will conduct their services Friday at 6:30 p.m.
