BENNINGTON -- John P. Griffin, 87, a former longtime resident of County Street, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 at the Hoosick Falls (NY) Health Center following a long illness.

Born in Bennington Nov. 25, 1916, he was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Lee) Griffin. He received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of the former St. Joseph’s Commercial School in Bennington.

In earlier years Mr. Griffin was employed as an administrator at the BenMont Corp. from 1937 to 1987. Mr. Griffin was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 307.

Mr. Griffin was an avid bowler, golfer and fisherman.

Survivors include a sister, Agnes Shea of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; two nieces, Ann Graney of Hoosick Falls, N.Y. and Kay McCauley of Salem, N.Y.; several grand nieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews, and cousins. Mr. Griffin was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters, James Griffin, Edward W. Griffin, Alice Griffin and Margaret Curran.

The funeral will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer, and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Contributions in memory of John P. Griffin may be made to the Hoosick Falls Health Center through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of K of C Council 307 are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. for the recitation of the rosary for Mr. Griffin.
