John P. Morrissey 1929 - 2008 BENNINGTON John P. Morrissey, 78, a lawyer and former state judge, died Sunday at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center after a short illness. Born on July 16, 1929, the son of Francis E. Morrissey and the former Frances A. Andrews, he was educated in area schools and was a 1947 graduate of the former Bennington High School. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1951 and the former Albany Law School in 1954. An Army veteran, John served as an investigator in the Intelligence Division from 1954 to 1957. He practiced law in the firm of Morrissey, Barber & Gilman until 1968, when he was appointed by Gov. Philip Hoff to the Vermont District Court. In 1973 Gov. Thomas Salmon appointed him to the Vermont Superior Court, where he served as a superior court judge until he resigned in 1983. From 1983 until 2007, he was in private practice as a lawyer in Bennington. Mr. Morrissey was also active in civic affairs, serving over the years as both Bennington village attorney and town attorney, as well as counsel for the Bennington School District in the mid-1980's. In the 1960's he served as chairman of the Mount Anthony Union High School board during the design and construction of the school. He was past president of the Greater Vermont Association, a longtime member of the Stark Hose Company, Bennington Fire Department and for many years had also served as announcer of the Bennington Battle Day parade. He leaves his wife, the former Annette A. Bushee, whom he married June 5, 1954. Besides his wife, he leaves his three children, John P. Morrissey of Chatham, N.J., Suzanne M. Morrissey of South Burlington, and Meg M. Parker of Quechee, and their spouses; five grandchildren, and his half-brother, Francis E. Morrissey of Bennington, and his half-sister, Patricia M. Kemp of Greenwich, Conn. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at 11 a.m. from St John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington, where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.
