BENNINGTON -- John P. Proud, 92, a well-known resident of Pleasant Valley Road, Bennington, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

He was born in Bennington on May 2, 1915. He was the son of the late John J. and Julia (Gibney) Proud. He was a graduate of Saint Francis de Sales Academy and a 1933 graduate of Bennington High School. He later attended Temple University and St. Anselms College.

He married the former Helen Kinney on Oct. 11, 1939, at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

While in high school Mr. Proud was active in sports and later played on various industrial league teams. He also worked at the Big Mill where he learned to be a spinner.

In January of 1937 he became associated with the Adams Clothes Shop. In June of 1937 John was named manager and after the death of Mr. Adams in June of 1938 he became a partner and then owner, a relationship that lasted 52 years. During his business career he was active in the Chamber of Commerce and was one of the organizers of the Downtown Association which started Midnight Madness and other retail promotions.

Mr. Proud was a 48-year member of the Stark Hose Company of the Bennington Fire Department. He was instrumental in the revival of the Aug. 16 celebration of the Battle of Bennington and for many years he was chairman and organizer of the Bennington Battle Day Parade. He was a life member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks 567 and a Fourth Degree member the Knights of Columbus Council 307. He was active in the local and state Democratic Party and was the local chairman for a number of years. He was also a member of the Board of Civil Authority and as chairman he rearranged many of its duties and instigated the use of the voting machine.

Survivors include three daughters Mary Specht and her husband William of Charlotte, North Carolina, Anne Moylan of West Boylston, Mass., and Julie Ray and her husband David of Lynn, Mass.; two sons John P. Proud Jr. of Barton, and Timothy J. Proud of Bennington; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at 11:30 am with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at noon.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday December 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Friday from 10:30 am until 11:30 am.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

If friends desire contributions in memory of Mr. Proud may be made to the Sacred Heart School through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main Street Bennington, VT 05201.

Members of the Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday for a prayer service. The Bennington Lodge of Elks will be conducting their service on Thursday at 6 p.m. All members of the Bennington Fire Department are requested to meet at the funeral home at 6:30 pm to pay their respects to the family.
