John F. Porter

1937 - 2014 POWNAL John F. "Jack" Porter, 76, a resident of Fern Street in Pownal, Vt., died Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, following a brief illness. He was born in Norwalk, Conn., March 24, 1937. He was the son of the late John and Catherine Murphy Porter. He received his education in Norwalk. From 1955 to 1957 Jack served in the United States Navy. In earlier years, Jack was employed as a truck driver. He later worked in the maintenance department at the Berkshire Medica Center in Pittsfield, Mass. Jack enjoyed cross word puzzles and was a New England Patriot Football fan. Survivors include his companion, Sandy Goddard of North Adams, Mass.; his children and their spouses, John P. Porter of Logan, Utah, William J. Porter of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Richard J. Porter and Jennifer of Tooele, Utah, and Lori Ann Pratt and Roger of Naugatuck, Conn.; fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Withall of Boca Raton, Fla., and Kathy Reynolds of Georgetown, Conn., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, James M. Porter and two brothers, Richard Porter and Harold "Butch" Porter. FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of Mr. Porter, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. The burial will take place in the family lot at Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal, at the convenience of the family. If friends desire, contributions in memory of John F. "Jack" Porter may be made to the Village Ambulance Service of Williamstown, Mass., or the Vermont , through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
