Obituary Condolences

John Joseph Rao 1925-2012 WILMINGTON John J. Rao, 86, of Wilmington, Vt., passed away peacefully on Friday, April 6, 2012, under the tender care of the nurses and staff at the Veterans Home in Bennington, Vt., following a difficult battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on September 10, 1925, the son of the late Salvatore and Josephine Rao and brother of the late Ralph, Isabelle, Camille, Salvatore, Joseph, and Silvio. John graduated from the Brooklyn High School of Automotive Trades, and then enlisted in the US Army Air Core in WWII, where he served as flight engineer on B-29's. He remained in Germany employed by the US Army as Ordinance Superintendent at the Garmisch Military Post. There, he married Inge "Chickie" Spies, and returned to the United States in 1953 with their daughter, Jeanne. While living in Bethpage, Long Island, he worked in the automotive industry until he retired to Wilmington, Vt., in 1983. John enjoyed years of boating and fishing during the summers on the Long Island Sound and skiing during the winters in New York and Vermont. While in Vermont, he introduced his grandchildren to the great outdoors and activities such as skiing, snowboarding, sledding, target shooting, tennis and golf. He often said that moving to Vermont was the best decision he ever made. He loved the mountains and the seclusion that reminded him of his hunting days in the Alps. John is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Inge "Chickie", of Wilmington, daughter Jeanne Daum of New Paltz, N.Y., granddaughter, Pamela Scheller and husband, Ryan, two great grandchildren, Andrew and Natalie of Medford, N.J., granddaughter, Kimberly Daum of Philadelphia, Pa., grandson, Matthew Daum, of New Paltz, N.Y., sister in law, Antoinette Rao of Smithtown, N.Y., nephew, Charles Rao of Smithtown, N.Y., nieces Madeline Rao of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Marie Hock of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, as well as, many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in May at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Walden, NY and a private burial at the Riverview Cemetary, in Wilmington, VT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Veterans Home "American Way" in Bennington, VT, or the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Disaster Relief Fund, c/o Covey & Allen Funeral Home, PO Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.
