Obituary Condolences

NORTH DORSET -- John Richard Sweeney, 80, of North Dorset, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. He was born on June 21, 1927, the son of the late John and Edith (Fairman) Sweeney.

John enjoyed fishing. camping and travel. He was a historian of local lore and a phenomenal storyteller who could yarn for hours with entertaining and humorous tales of the past. He always loved a good joke and was known for his quick wit and dry humor.

John’s love for cars resulted in many years in the auto business purchasing, selling and servicing vehicles. He was known throughout Vermont by many who trusted and relied on him for their automotive needs.

He served his country as a coxswain in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946 during the end of World War II. As a Sea Bee, he traveled and worked at numerous Philippine islands. He was a member of the VFW Harned Fowler Post 6471 of Manchester Center.

John Sweeney is survived by his wife, Susan (Reed) Sweeney of North Dorset; a daughter, Storm F. Sweeney of North Dorset; two sons, Charles R. Abry and his wife, Natasha Duarte, of Hinesburg, and John H. Abry and his wife, Alison; and a grandson, Reed Abry of Colchester.

There will be a celebration of his life for everyone who knew and loved him on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Sweeney residence.

Arrangements are under the care of the Ker Westerlund and Fleming Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 57 High St., Brattleboro.
