John R. Stone Jr. 1929-2012 John R. Stone Jr., 82, a longtime resident of School Street in Bennington died Tuesday June 12, 2012 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington surrounded by his family He was born in Bennington, Vt., November 1, 1929. He was the son of the late John R. Stone Sr. and Stella C. (Colburn) Stone. John received his education in Bennington and was a 1947 graduate of Bennington High School. He married the former Jean Gangloff on June 17, 1950 in Manchester, Vt. For many years John owned and operated an electronics service center on School St. in Bennington. He was a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council 307 in Bennington and a member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567 and the Putnam Hose of the Bennington Fire Department. John was a Past President of the Bennington Fire Department, served as selectman for the town of Bennington, was a Justice of the Peace in Bennington and served on the Board of Civil Authority. John enjoyed camping and flying. Survivors include his wife of 62 years Jean Stone of Bennington. His children, Susan Stone of Chinle, Arizona, Margaret Harris and her husband Bruce of Fort Pierce, Florida, Judith Stone of Pownal, Vt., Elizabeth Ravelin and her husband Richard of Richmond, Vt., Kathleen Atkins and her husband James Peterson of North Bennington, Vt., and Mary Dunham of Clifton Park, N.Y.; nineteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren; two sisters, Emily Kennedy of Bennington, Vt. and Marjorie Swift of Arlington, Vt., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Patricia Stone and a son John Stone III. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday June 16, 2012 with a prayer at 10:30 a.m. and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of John R. Stone Jr. may be made to the Bennington Special Olympics Through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201. The following organizations are requested to meet at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday to conduct their services. The Knights of Columbus at 6 p.m.The Bennington Fire Department at 6:30 p.m. The Bennington Lodge of Elks at 6:45 p.m.
