Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mr. John V. Hannan, 52, a resident of Chapel Road, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident near Clarksburg, W.Va.

He was born in Bennington, June 20, 1954. He was the son of the late John and Zelma (Klibas) Hannan. He received his education in Arlington and was a 1972 graduate of Arlington Memorial High School. In 1976, he graduated from Southern Vermont College with a bachelor’s degree in business and accounting. He married the former Julie Montgomery on May 15, 1982, at Saint Francis deSales Church in Bennington.

John began his working career at Woolworth’s, where he was a department manager. He later worked at the Hale Company in Arlington, where he was in charge of the shipping, receiving and production departments. John had also been manager of the Cheese House in Arlington and for a time was employed at HBH Prestain in Arlington. For 25 years, John owned his own business Hannan’s Tax Prep. In 1989 John joined the Arlington Rescue Squad, where he served as president.

John also worked for the Bennington Rescue Squad. His greatest love was being a training officer. He recently attended Hudson Valley Community College, where he studied to become a paramedic. For the last six months, he was a deputy sheriff with the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department. He was also an associate member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 601.

John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fly fishing on the Batten Kill.

He also enjoyed playing guitar and had sung with the Arlington Chorale.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Hannan, of Shaftsbury; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Gwendolen Hannan, of Bennington; two nieces and their husbands, Heather and Charles Hannan, of Shaftsbury, and Erin and Edward Tifft, of Bennington; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Caleb, Jadyn, Emma, Kiara and Hope Tifft, of Bennington, and Shelby and Connor Hannan, of Shaftsbury; and a brother in-law, Robert Montgomery and his wife Amy Jo Montgomery of Sunderland.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart-Saint Francis deSales Church at 11 a.m., where the Mass of resurrection will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, from 7 to 9 p.m.

If friends desire contributions in memory of Mr. John V. Hannan may be made to either the Bennington or Arlington Rescue Squads through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

All members of the following organizations are requested to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home to pay their respects to the family: The Bennington Rescue Squad at 7:30 p.m., Arlington Rescue Squad at 7:45 p.m. and the Manchester Rescue at 8 p.m.
