Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mr. John W. Gygax, 89, a longtime resident of Maple Street, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

Born in Bennington on June 30, 1915, he was the son of the late John and Lily (Munnoch) Gygax. He received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of the former Bennington High School class of 1933. He later attended Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. Mr. Gygax was a U.S. Army World War II veteran having served with Company I, 172nd Infantry Regiment 43rd Division. He retired from the United States Army Reserve as a Lt. Colonel.

Mr. Gygax married the former Jane Barber on Jan. 5, 1942 in Bennington.

Mr. Gygax was employed by the U. S. Postal Service in Bennington for 26 years until the time of his retirement. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1332, American Legion Post 13 and Bennington Elks Lodge No. 567.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Gygax of Bennington; a son, William H. Gygax of Bennington; and a grandson, Jeffrey Gygax of Washington, DC.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Demasi officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

The burial with military honors will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
