1949 - 2016 BENNINGTON, VT Joseph A. Bishop, 67, a resident of Somerset Road in Searsburg, VT, died on Friday, May 27, 2016 in North Bennington at the home of his daughter, following a brief illness. He was born in Bennington, VT, May 23, 1949. He was the son of the late Earl Gordon Bishop and Mable Alice (Campbell) Bishop. Joe received his education in Bennington. In 1968, Joe enlisted in the United State Army. He received his Basic and ATT training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He served in Viet Nam, and over his twenty year career in the service he was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Augsburg, Germany, Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, Nuremberg, Germany, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Richardson, Alaska, Fort Lewis, Washington, and Fort Sill, Oklahoma from which he retired after twenty years and eight days on September 1, 1988. Joe married the former Patricia E. Valentine on August 24, 1991 in Woodford, VT. In earlier years, Joe was employed at UST and most recently at Kaman in Bennington. He enjoyed hunting, and fishing. His family was his main interest. Survivors include his wife, Patricia E. Bishop of Searsburg, VT, his children; Joseph A. Bishop, Jr. of Delaware, William A. Bishop (April) of Maryland, Theresa Watson (Frank) of Bristol, Rhode Island, Leonard Kelley (Linda) of Bennington, Laura Lee Andrew of Hoosick Falls, NY, Bernadette Summer (Scott) of North Adams, MA, Karen Butler (James) of North Bennington and Leslie Andrew (Chip) of Arlington, VT. He leaves twenty grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Tow brothers survive, Herman Bishop (Virginia) of Bennington and James Bishop of New Hampshire. He leaves two sisters, Ellen Coyne of Poultney, VT and Ruth Jewell of New Hampshire. Joe is predeceased by two sisters Lucille Bishop and Fran Dow and three brothers Earl, Ken and Amos Bishop. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 main St. Bennington on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Tim Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in Cutler Cemetery in Searsburg with military honors. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening, June 2, from 6 until 8PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St Bennington, VT 05201
