Joe Madison 1935-2008 LANESBOROUGH Joseph Bruce Hunter Madison, 72, of 111 Silver St., son of Hunter Wellington Madison and Minnie Wrubel, died peacefully Tuesday morning, April 1, at home, following a long battle with cancer. He was encircled by the embrace of loved ones in his final moments. Born in the Washington, D.C., area on Aug. 18, 1935, he attended Bullis Prep School in Silver Spring, Md., and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1957. After years as a career officer in the Air Force and Air Force Reserve, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, forging a second career as a management consultant. He advised major international banks on security and automation for electronic funds transfer systems, serving as expert witness in litigation. He pioneered concepts such as universal mapping from one type of payment to another, name searching for banks, and filtering for OFAC, a branch of the Department of Treasury, working with banks to enforce sanctions and embargoes. An active participant of the Jewish Community in the Berkshires, Joe coordinated holiday packages for the elderly throughout the county, supervising baking with other volunteers, and involving children in the projects. He served as board president of Congregation Beth El, of Bennington, Vt., where he was a member for many years. A gourmet cook, Joe enjoyed bucket-tapping his Maple Sugarbush each February, keeping bee hives, then sharing his bounty of maple syrup and honey with friends. An avid hiker, nature lover and outdoorsman, he helped found The Monday Mountain Boys hiking club soon after his retirement. He scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro in Kenya at aged 65, then climbed Peru's Machu Picchu at age 70. His last adventure was rafting the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon at age 71. In the last few summers of his life, he made other significant trips, touring pubs in Dublin with his son, and hiking the Acadia Mountains with his eldest daughter. He leaves his wife, Florence Grende, and son, Seth Grende Madison, both of Lanesborough; three daughters, Laura Madison of Middletown, N.J., Sharie Madison of Oak Park, Calif., and Patricia Antonville of Thousands Oaks, Calif.; five grandchildren, Chris and Bill Gleason of Middletown. N.J., Ellen and Ben Kromnick of Oak Park, Calif., and Kimberly Gilbert of Thousand Oaks, Calif,; his sister, Linda Swanson and niece,Tammy Swanson, both of West Virginia, and his former wife, Sarah Madison of Marion. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Joe will be held at the Bennington Temple Beth El Congregation on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Burial with full military honors will follow in the family lot in Bennington Hebrew Cemetery.
