Obituary Condolences

MANCHESTER -- Joseph Sweet, 69, a longtime resident of Manchester, died on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 at his residence in The Meadows. He was born in Bennington Sept. 2, 1934, the son of the late Walter and Ida (Hurley) Sweet. He spent his childhood in Bennington and attended school there.

He worked for many years in the family rubbish removal business and after moving to Manchester he worked for Burgess Brothers Construction driving a truck. He was a member of the Bennington Moose Lodge. In his free time Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a good mechanic and liked to tinker on his cars.

He is survived by his former wife and good friend Sharon Young of Manchester; his son Edward (Chubby) Sweet of Bennington; his daughters, Pam Burch of Bennington, Josie Mattison of Bennington, Nancy Schippe of North Adams, Mass, Kandi Mayette of Manchester, Sharon Decker of Granville, N.Y. and Jolene Kalanquia of East Dorset; a brother, Jack Sweet of Bennington; and his sisters, Annabelle Mears of Bennington, Josephine Colvin of Bennington, Betty Mayer of Bennington and Saddie Rice of Bennington. Also 20 grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers Steve Jacobs, Harold Sweet. Richard Sweet, Robert Sweet and Francis Sweet; and sisters Lillian Muckle and Irene Mears; and grandchild Joy.

On Monday, Sept. 8 friends may call at Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester from noon - 1 with the funeral service starting at 1. A graveside service of committal will follow in the White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington the Reverend John Mitchell, Pastor of the Zion Church in Manchester will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, C/O Brewster Funeral Services, P.O. Box 885 Manchester, VT 05255.
