BENNINGTON -- Mr. Joseph Francis Carroll Sr., 86, a resident of Barber Street, died Monday, July 31, 2006, at his residence surrounded by his family following a long illness.

He was born in North Bennington Nov. 26, 1919. He was the son of the late Edward and Anna Theresa (O’Shea) Carroll. He received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of Bennington High School class of 1938.

Joe married the former June Frances Murrell on April 11, 1959, at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

In earlier years, Joe was employed at Horst’s Dairy in Bennington, and for 30 years he was employed by Central Vermont Public Service in Bennington, from which he retired in 1992.

Joe was a member of the Bennington Elks Lodge No. 567. He was a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 307 and a parishioner of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. Joe was active in local and national politics. He was on a first-name basis with many of the past and present senators and governors in the state of Vermont. Joe was a justice of the peace for more than 40 years and had served as chairman of the Board of Civil Authority for many years. He served on the Bennington School District Board of Directors and was a trustee with the village of Bennington, where he represented Ward 1. He was also a member of the Bennington Town Recreation Committee and the Bennington Lions Club. Joe loved animals. His family was his main interest, and he was a very devoted foster parent.

Survivors include his wife, June F. Carroll of Bennington; his children, Edward Joseph Carroll of New York City, James Thomas Carroll of Bennington, John Lynch Carroll of Groton, Conn., Joseph Francis Carroll Jr. of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Debra Dufur of Rockland, Mass., Evelyn Ann Carroll of Bennington and Robert Kenneth Brace of Salt Lake City, Utah; nine grandchildren: Declan, Benton, Justin, Jessica and Julianna Carroll, Noah, Adam and Emma Brace and Madeline Elaine Dufur; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Pendergast and Margaret Carroll, and a brother, Edward Carroll.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer; from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m., the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Saint John’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

If friends desire, contributions in memory of Joseph Francis Carroll Sr. may be made to either Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church or Hospice of Bennington County through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of the following organizations are requested to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home to conduct their services. The Bennington Elks Lodge will meet at 6:30 p.m., and the Knights of Columbus will meet at 7 p.m. Members of the Bennington Lions Club will meet at 6:45 p.m. to pay their respects.
