1928 - 2015 SHAFTSBURY Joseph Paul Gauthier, 87, a former resident of Mountain View Drive in Shaftsbury died peacefully Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington following a brief illness. He was born in Bennington, VT January 17, 1928. He was the son of the late Hector and Lyda (LaFlamme) Gauthier. Paul received his education in Bennington and was a 1946 graduate of Bennington High School. Mr. Gauthier served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married the former Louise Harris on October 29, 1966 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. In earlier years Paul was employed at the Ben Mont Paper Company and later worked at Johnson Controls in Bennington from which he retired in 1993. His home and church was his main interest. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 13. In earlier years Paul enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had an avid interest in history, especially the steam locomotive era. He was a member of the Rutland Railroad Historical Society and an active contributor at Society conventions. Survivors include his wife, Louise Gauthier of Bennington. A son, John P. Gauthier of Burlington, VT; a brother, Jerome Gauthier and his wife, Sylvia of Brookfield, ILL and a sister , Jeanette Paul of Nesquehoning, PA along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Lorraine Young. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday, October 29, with a prayer at 10:15a.m. followed by the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial at 11a.m. at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. The burial will take place in the family lot at Saint John's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
