Joseph E. Griffis, Jr.

1927 - 2013 BENNINGTON Joseph Eugene Griffis, Jr., 86, of Overlea Road, and currently of the Vermont Veteran Home, died on Sunday, March 30, 2013, following a short illness.

Born in Bennington on Jan. 16, 1927, the son of Joseph and Vina (Chase) Griffis, Sr., he received his education in Bennington schools.

He spent four years in the Navy and 18 years in the Air Force, serving in World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. Mr. Griffis had attained the rank of Staff Sgt., and was honorably discharged.

Mr. Griffis was employed at the Vermont Veterans Home for 11 years, before retiring.

He and his wife, the former Louise Frances Elwell, celebrated their 53rd anniversary on Feb. 2. They were married in 1960.

He was married to the former Dorothy Stroffeleno, and they had two daughters who survive, Melinda Griffis Vosburg, and her husband, R.J. of Bennington, and Melissa Davis of Arlington; Louise's children, Dolores Percey, and her husband, Herbert of Shaftsbury, and Roy Milligan and his wife, Mary Ellen Mahoney, of Shaftsbury; eight grandchildren, John Davis, Kayla Davis, Willie Hall, Krystle Vosburg, Rebecca Bishop, Allison Bishop, Angela Milligan, and Seth Milligan, and great-grandsons, Brandon, Tyler and Ben. Joseph leaves several nieces and nephews, and one sister-in-law, Denise Griffis.

He was predeceased by one sister, Mildred Mears, and by one brother, Frances Griffis.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the White Chapel on East Road at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.
