Joseph L. Krawczyk, Sr

1919-2012 Mr. Joseph L. Krawczyk, Sr., 93, a resident of Rice Lane in Bennington died peacefully Thursday January 10, 2013 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born in Bennington, the twelfth of thirteen children on February 22, 1919, the son of the late Albert and Agnes Krawczyk. He received his formal education in Bennington area schools.

Prior to World War II he entered the United States Army and fought in the Pacific Area of Operation. While serving in the Philippine Campaign he received a Battle Field Commission and was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, the Bronze Star for Valor, and two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat. After WWII he was discharged from the Army but later called back to active duty shortly before the Korean Conflict to command Company C, 172nd Infantry Regiment, Bennington National Guard. He remained in the Vermont National Guard for the remainder of his 23 years service and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

On September 21, 1946 Joe married the former Madeleine Chenaille of Pownal at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in North Pownal. They were married 56 years prior to Madeline's death on July 12, 2002.

In his earlier years Mr. Krawczyk was employed by the EZ Mills and later for 30 years at the Union Carbide Corporation prior to his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Krawczyk is survived by his eight children and their spouses, Col. Joseph L. Krawczyk Jr. U.S. Army, Ret, George C. Krawczyk, Judith A. Kohutich and husband John, Alan R. Krawczyk and wife Ruth, Donna Maxon and husband Randy, Charles J. Krawczyk and wife Connie, David M. Krawczyk and wife Kerry and Annette Shine and husband Paul. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Krawczyk was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1332, American Legion Post 13 and the Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 15, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

The burial with military honors will follow at the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Should friends desire to make contributions in memory of Mr. Krawczyk they may be made to Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT, 05201.

All members of the following organizations are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday evening to conduct services in memory Joseph Krawczyk Sr.: VFW Post 1332 at 6:15 p.m. and American Legion Post 13 at 6:45 p.m.
