Joseph F. Latif 1922-2010 PITTSFIELD On Tuesday, August 24, 2010 Joseph F. Latif passed away at home with his wife of 67 years by his side. Born on June 5, 1922 in Pittsfield, to Fareedee (Freda) Ferris and Naseef ul'Tife, both immigrants from Lebanon, the family moved to Bennington in 1940 where he took over the Willams & Bugbee gas station from his older brother Michael Williams. Joseph and his brother, Francis owned and operated William's & Bugbee until his retirement in1984. His sister, Genevieve, also worked at the business. He married Jane Waite in 1942 and in 1944 joined the Navy to serve in World War II. Leaving his wife and other family members to run the business, he became a motor machinist and served on a PT Boat until 1946. In 1957, after over seven years of attending night classes, he earned a BS in Business Administration from Sienna College. Upon retirement he became a member of the board of directors for the Bennington Savings & Loan Association (now the Bank of Bennington) and was later chosen as Chairman of the Board, a position he held for 17 years. He was a member of The American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Knights of Columbus. During his retirement he took up the sport of golf, transferred and edited all of his home movies to DVD and enjoyed travelling and attending PT Boat reunions throughout the country. His greatest pleasure came from his family and he always cherished the many family gatherings over the years. He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters, RoseMary Valentine and James Azzoline, Jayne and Duffy Outwater, all of Bennington; daughter Michal and Steven Amadon of Culpepper, Va., and son Stephen Latif and Leslie Robbins of Simpsonville, S.C.; sister, Genevieve Woodard and brother, Francis and Lucy Latif, all of Bennington: 12 grandchildren, Gregory Moore, Amy Glynn, Nora Imprescia, Melanie Norcross, Kara Clark, Justin Amadon, Amanda Dezaki, Nathan Amadon, Aaron Latif, Theresa Latif, Hilda Outwater and Tommi Outwater: and great-grandchildren Howie, Ethan, Emma, Sophie, Ian, Rebecca, Elena, Alden and Zoe. He was pre-deceased by daughter Jo-ann Smith and great-grandson Brian Dezaki. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday August 28, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered. The burial with military honors will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday August 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to PT Boats, Inc. or local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 601 through Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main Street Bennington, VT 05201.
