1923-2009
SANDWICH, MA - Joseph Leo Maloney, 85, died peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009.
Born Dec. 30, 1923 in Bennington, Vt., he was the son of the late James and Alma LaFlamme Maloney. He attended school in Bennington and gratudated at the age of 16 from Benington High School. He served 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of World War II and Vietnam and was a member of the Super Constellation Unit at Otis Air Force Base. He moved to Sandwich in 1955 and opened the Marshland Restaurant in 1967 and remained active there until selling in 1981 and retiring to Pocasset.
Joe will be especially remembered for his lifelong passion for golf and bingo. He also played at Otis, Woodbriar and Holly Ridge Golf Clubs. He was also proud to have played at St. Andrew's and troon in Scotland. he had 21 recorded holes-in-one and had a garage full of trophies. Anyone who knew Joe knew of his quick wit and sly humor both on and off the golf course.
He is survived by his former wife Marie Billert Bekoff and their children, Karen Maloney, and her husband, Dennis Saluti of Osterville, Colleen, and her husband, Paul Foley of West Barnstable, Joseph "Corky", and his wife, Michele of East Sandwich, Kellie, and her husband, Scott Fillebrown of Malden and James "J.P.", and his wife, Deborah Maloney, of Sandwich.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Mark and and Anna Saluti, Rachel and Rebecca Foley, Sarah, Joshua and Cynthia Maloney, and Daniel, Matthew and Christopher Freitas, Amy Fillebrown, and Daniel and Katheryn Maloney. He is also survived by two sisters, Patricia McCormack and Lucille Hurd, and two brothers, Edward and Richard Maloney.
He was preceded in death by a sister Marie Holmes and five brothers, James, Robert, William, John and Andrew Maloney.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Visitation will be held from 1 to 3p.m., Sunday at NICKERSON-BOURNE FUNERAL HOME, 154 Rt. 6A, Sandwich. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by burial with full military rites at the Massachusetts national Cemetery in Bourne.
