Joseph Murphy Sr.

1927-2014 Joseph Murphy Sr., age 86, a long time resident of Schenectady, N.Y., died on Tuesday evening April 15, 2014. He was a well respected and proud husband, father, neighbor, mentor, devoted friend, and community volunteer throughout his lifetime. Mr. Murphy was a distinguished Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean conflict serving primarily on Destroyer Escorts deployed throughout the Pacific theater. He was born July 18, 1927 in Bennington, Vt. as the second of four sons to Thomas J. Murphy and Lillian E. Kelson of Bennington, Vt. He is predeceased by his spouse of 51 years, Marian E. Murphy of North Bennington, Vt. They were married on July 11, 1953 at the St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. Mrs. Murphy passed away in 2004. Following his military service during World War II and Korea, Mr. Murphy joined the General Electric Corp. as a machine repair technician and trainer. He worked primarily in the Large Motor, Generator and Turbine area. He retired from GE in 1988 after nearly 30 years of service. In retirement he spent his time focused on family, volunteering, community work, wood working and working the family garden Throughout his life he was integrally involved in a number of community, church and youth support activities including several leadership posts with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America including his selection to become a member of the Order of the Arrow. Mr. Murphy was a communicant of the former Sacred Heart/St. Columba's Catholic Church in Schenectady. He was a lifetime member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars as well as a long time active member and leader of VFW Post 357 in Schenectady, N.Y. During his life he was also active in the American Legion, Ancient Order of Hibernians. Mr. Murphy is survived by his three sons: CAPT Thomas Murphy, USN RET of Chesapeake, VA wife Rosanne; CAPT John Murphy USN RET of Arlington, VA wife Pam; and Mr. Joseph Murphy Jr of Guilderland NY wife Mary. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas J., Daniel P., Timothy J., Sean P. Murphy and Erin K Phillips and by five siblings, Mary Francis Murphy, Olga Dunn, Joan Douglas, Patrick Murphy and Barbara Malloy of Vermont as well as Lena Senecal of Georgia. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellen Street in Schenectady on Monday, April 21st from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Transfer will then be made to the Mahar & Son Fuineral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT where friends may call on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 10:15 A.M. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 11:00 A.M. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
