Julia M. Young 1913 - 2011 BENNINGTON Julia Marietta Young, 97, of West Main Street died Monday evening, July 25, 2011, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation, following a brief illness. Mrs. Young was born in North Pownal on Oct. 25, 1913, the daughter of Merle B. and Abigail B. Hoag Bates. She grew up in North Pownal where she received her early education. She continued her studies at Drury High School in North Adams, Mass., graduating with the Class of 1932. She was married to Rupert N. Young in Bennington on Nov. 14, 1941. He died Aug. 5, 1993. Mrs. Young had assisted her husband, a painting contractor, in the operation of his business caring for the office details. She had also assisted many area businesses as an executive secretary. For many years she had done professional baking from her home for upscale events in the area, she was well renowned for her extraordinary wedding cakes. With music being a cherished part of her life, she served many area churches as organist and vocal soloist. In later years she became the organist for The Vermont Veterans Home and Weston Hadden Nursing Home (now Centers For Living and Rehabilitation). She was greatly involved in volunteer work throughout her life right up until this summer, she had been a foster grandparent to children at Catamount Elementary School and Grace Christian School. She also volunteered her time to read at the story hour at Crescent Manor Nursing Home. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, nature and the out -of-doors. Mrs. Young leaves her nephews, Robert B. Heggie and Russell G. Heggie, both of Penn Yan, N.Y.; niece, Janice Rupert of Largo, Fla., and great-nieces, nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Leslie W. Bates who died May 27, 1998, and Lt. Col. (Ret) Raymond B. Bates who died Nov. 4, 1975; a sister, Beulah W. Bates Heggie Ballard who died March 16, 1993, and a niece, Renee Bates Whitney who died March 25, 2011. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Mrs. Young will be Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Gary Rogers, pastor of the North Pownal Congregational Church, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Private interment will take place in the Park Lawn Cemetery.
