Obituary Condolences

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Karen Allen Peck, 57, of Greenville, S.C., died June 3, 2006, after a long battle with leukemia.

Born April 4, 1949, in Port Chester, N.Y., she was the daughter of Stewart E. Allen and the late Sarah Rudisill Allen.

Ms. Peck was employed as the medical office manager for Upstate Urology Associates of Greenville for the past nine years. She also served as a notary public for the state of South Carolina. Karen graduated from Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vt., in 1967, and a cum laude from the University of Vermont in 1971 with a bachelor’s of science degree in education.

She moved to Greenville in 1991, but previously lived in Bennington and Burlington, Vt., Key West and St. Petersburg, Fla., and Glens Falls, N.Y.

Although trained as an English teacher, her professional career was spent in medical settings. Her teaching skills were expressed in training and mentoring co-workers (and employers). Wherever she worked she was an exemplary employee who made many close friends. At Upstate Urology she managed and integrated complex computer systems and navigated the nightmarish world of medical insurance and regulations. While her long hours and devotion to her job ensured a smooth running practice, Karen also found the time to be a human face and compassionate voice to every patient.

She was married twice, to Lee Weatherby and Michael Peck. Most important in Karen’s life were her daughter, Jennifer Peck, and her granddaughter, Morgan Dowling, who survive her. Also surviving are her father, Stewart E. Allen of Hendersonville, N.C.; a sister, Deborah Allen of Urbana, Ill., and her husband, Howard Schein; a brother, Craig Allen of Shrewsbury, Mass., and his wife, Lynne; three nieces; and her beloved cat, Chloe.

Karen was an avid reader, knitter, amateur genealogist and collector of Boyd’s Bears. She had a quick wit, a big heart and a great sense of humor. She was always more concerned for the needs and feelings of others than for her own, and she was a devoted friend. During her difficult illness this past year, friends, family, her doctors and nurses marveled at her indomitable spirit, courage and positive attitude in the face of adversity and unselfish concern for others.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday, June 9, 2006, at 2 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, Karen’s request was that memorial contributions be made toward the purchase of a blanket warmer for the stem cell unit of the Cancer Center of the Carolinas. Contributions may be sent to: Cancer Charities Foundation, 65 International Drive, Greenville, SC 29615, and earmarked “Memorial for Karen Peck.”
