BENNINGTON -- Karl H. Martin Jr., 77, a resident of East Street, died suddenly Thursday, June 22, 2006, at his residence.

Born in New York City, Jan. 30, 1929, he was the son of the late Karl H. Martin Sr., builder of the “Martin Wasp” automobile, and the former Elizabeth (Jennings) Martin. He received his education in the Bennington schools and was a 1946 graduate of the former Bennington High School.

Better known as “Ham,” he married the former Marie Valliere on May 16, 1953, in Bennington.

As a young man, together with his brother, he owned a 46-foot catch sail boat, which they used to operate a charter sailing business off the Florida coast.

In earlier years Mr. Martin was employed at the former Bennington Display and at Bijur Lubricating. In his free time he enjoyed woodworking and cabinet making.

Mr. Martin was a life member of Bennington Elks Lodge 567.

Survivors include his wife, Marie V. Martin of Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Karl C. Martin III and Willene S.R. Martin of Bennington; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Spence Kass of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Ruhbye Martin; a niece, Elizabeth Martin; and two great-nieces, all of Boerne, Texas. Mr. Martin was predeceased by a brother, John R. Martin.

At Mr. Martin’s request, private family services will be held at a later date.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
