Obituary Condolences

Katherine A. Foucher 1916 - 2009 BENNINGTON Katherine A. Foucher, 92, died peacefully Feb. 17, 2009, at her home on Grove Street, which was also her birthplace, with her children around her. Katherine was born on the 24th of April 1916, the fifth of seven children of Edward F.P. and Jessie Mary Aldrich Whitman. She was educated in the Bennington schools. She married Walter D. Foucher at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Katherine has always been devoted to her family and her children. Due to the time and necessities of life, she was unable to be a stay at home mother. She worked at various mills and factories around Bennington including the Allen-A, E-Z, National Carbon/Union Carbide and Tansitor. But her children never felt neglected. In addition to as much as her time she could give them, she had her mother, Jessie, and her sister, Mary, to help raise them. Shortly after World War II struck, Walter enlisted in the Navy and Katherine and the children moved out of their small apartment on the corner of Safford St. and Carrigan Lane to live at 224 Grove St., the family homestead. Her love and devotion to her children became more encompassing as her grandchildren and great grandchildren were born. She extended this love to her 15 great grandchildren and was a favorite of them all. One of Katherine's great-great grandfathers was Welcome Luther, one of the early settlers in Bennington, appearing in the 1810 census as a blacksmith and also in the Harwood Diaries. One of her great-great-great grandfathers was Dr. Elijah Hewes of Glastenbury, Vt., who wrote a medical textbook entitled "Female Nurse" for which he was somewhat famous back in the day. Her great grandfather Peter Whitman came to this country from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, in 1851 and settled in the Troy, N.Y., area. Katherine was a member of the Bennington Senior Citizens Club and a former member of AARP. She was a convert to Catholicism and a member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church. She also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels Program. The family wishes to give special thanks to dear friends Harold and Lois Weaver and caregivers JoAnn Conklin and Joyce Burgess. Many thanks to VNA and Hospice and the volunteers for their support. She leaves her children Walter Jr., and Mary Ellen Foucher, of Clinton Corners, N.Y., Diane Leary of Burlington, Vt., and Thomas and Carla Foucher of Albuquerque, N.M., 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by an infant brother Joseph Whitman and four brothers and a sister, George, Edward, William, Charles and Mary Whitman. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, with a prayer at 10:30 a.m. and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday Feb. 22, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. Remembrances will be shared Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. If friends desire contributions in memory of Katherine A.
