Katherine Bartlett Marsden

1920 - 2014 BENNINGTON Katherine Bartlett Marsden, 94, a longtime resident of Union Street, passed away Oct. 5, at Rivers Edge Community Care Home in Bennington. Katherine was born in Berea, Ky. on June 17, 1920 and was the daughter of Earnest Bartlett and Ruby (Couser) Bartlett. When Katherine was 11 years old the family left Kentucky and relocated to the Bennington area. She attended school in Bennington and graduated from Bennington High School in 1937. In June of 1941, Katherine married LeRoy J. Marsden and they began married life living at 140 Union St. They resided in that home for over 60 years raising their family of three children, working, active in the community and church, gardening, enjoying grandchildren and great grandchildren. Beginning in 1970 Katherine and Roy spent the winter months at their property in Melrose, Fla. Katherine and Roy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 6, 2001. Roy passed away in December of 2001. Katherine worked as the Welcome Wagon Hostess for Bennington for over eighteen years welcoming new residents into the community. She was employed by the Bennington Chamber of Commerce for five years, was an Avon Representative, was the President of the Mt Anthony PTA group, and active in fundraising for the local YMCA and March of Dimes. Katherine was also very active in the Second Congregational Church. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship, taught Sunday school classes, was involved in the Snowball Bazar, the Antique Show, and church fundraising activities. Katherine was considered an especially good dancer and along with her husband was a charter member of the square dancing group the Catamount Gadabouts. Together they taught many people, young and old, the art of Square Dancing. For over twenty-five years they traveled throughout the eastern half of the country teaching at and enjoying many dance events. Katherine is survived by a son, James Marsden of Bennington; and a daughter, Martha (Tom) Veitch of Sunderland, Vt. Katherine is also survived by a sister, Sarah Duncan of Gaithersburg, Md.; and Robert Bartlett of Melrose, Fla. Other surviving family members include seven grandchildren, Steven (Cindy) Marsden, Tina (Jim) Mathers, Becky (Scott) Farrington, all of Bennington, Vt. Andrea (John) Hennelly of Boston, Mass.. Angelica (John) Stasolla of Hinsdale, N.H. Robert (Julie) Marsden of Castleton, Vt. Bradley Marsden of Hawaii. Also, fifteen great-grandchildren, James, Andrew, and Ryan Marsden, Heather McManigle and Jami Mathers, Luke and Abby Farrington, Jack Hennelly, Thomas and Jacob Walls, Reilly and Chloe Marsden, Tajah, Cricket, and Blayke Marsden. She was predeceased by her son, Douglas Marsden, in Nov. 2007; her brother, Charles Bartlett, in 2013 and her grandson, Barry Marsden, in 1995. A remembrance service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. I will always remember Aunt Katherine (and Uncle Roy) fondly. I mostly saw them during the winters they spent in FL. We were sorry to hear about her passing, but I know she lived a long and productive life. So glad that the four siblings were able to get together that last time, before Dad died.
