Obituary Condolences

Katherine Oakes "Kay" 1933-2010 Kay left us on November 18, 2010 after a long and courageous battle. We are sure that Chuck, Ronnie and Eric were there to welcome her to her new home. A lifelong resident of Woodford, Kay was born on August 29, 1933, the youngest of four girls born to Isabelle and Murray Cutler. Kay attended local schools graduating from Benn-High class of 1951. While there, she was a proud member of the first girls' basketball team. After high school, Kay worked for Tansitor Electronics and the Union Carbide Corporation for many years. After retirement from the Union Carbide, she went to work in the food service industry at local elementary schools. Kay took great pleasure and pride working with the children and enjoyed all of their stories. Kay also made many close friends whom she spoke with highly and often. Kay greatly valued their ongoing friendships. Kay enjoyed cooking, camping and craft shows. She never turned down a trip to the racetrack or a good game of cards. Kay was an avid bingo player and a tag sale connoisseur. She was always accompanied by her loving husband, Charles (Chuck) Oakes, to whom she was married for almost fifty years before his death. Kay is survived by seven grandchildren who were the light of her life; Caitlin, Meagan, Michael, Patrick, Veronica, Dylan and Ella as well as their parents; Bob and Jane Oakes of South Burlington, Ron Oakes of Woodford and Jen and Jim Turkenkopf of Manhattan and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind an extended family including special nieces, Stephanie and Nadine, Shari Pierce, Joanne Amadon and Janice Corey, her best friend who was always there for her. The Oakes family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Greg King and all the wonderful staff at Bayada nurses (especially Lilly, Maria, JJ, and Gracie). FUNERAL NOTICE: The family will be in attendance at the E. P. Mahar & Sons Funeral Home on Monday, November 22 from 5:00-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 23 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Park Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kay's memory to The Molly Stark School through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
