POWNAL -- Mrs. Kathleen Maria Roy, 70, widow of Donald J. Roy Sr., a resident of North Pownal Road, Pownal, died unexpectedly Monday, March 10, 2003 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Born in Babylon, N.Y. Feb. 22, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Charles J. and Kathleen (Phelan) Broadhurst. She received her education in Williamstown, Mass. and later attended Southern Vermont College in Bennington.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy were married in Williamstown on Oct. 6, 1952. Mr. Roy died Jan. 7, 1986.

In earlier years Mrs. Roy served with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America as a troop leader She also enjoyed driving the children on the school bus for the Pownal Elementary School. Mrs. Roy owned and operated ABC Kennels in Pownal and was a former lister for the town of Pownal for many years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and a regular participant in the Bible study group at the church.

She was an avid bridge player and continued her life long passion for bridge until the time of her illness. Kathleen was a free spirit with a zest for life, that was irrepressible and few were immune to.

Her passion for life survives in the hearts of those she loved. Her family thanks her supportive community.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Henrietta Lynn and Wills Pike of Oakdale, Conn. and Kathleen Anne Roy of Bennington; two grandchildren, Jenna Lynn Head and Courtney Elise Head; a brother and sister-in-law, Francis I. and Carol Broadhurst of Centerville, Mass.; three sisters-in-law, A. Lorraine Broadhurst of Dalton, Mass., Shirley Broadhurst of Pittsfield, Mass., Mary Broadhurst of Agawam, Mass.; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Roy was predeceased by a son, Donald J. Roy, Jr. also four brothers and two sisters, Charles J. Broadhurst, Thomas R. Broadhurst, John Broadhurst, Harry D. Broadhurst, Jane Ann Worcester and Theda Dixon.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church where the liturgy and Christian death will be celebrated by Rev. Vincent J. Coppola, c.s.c., associate pastor.

Friends are invited to pay respects to the family at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. The wake service will be offered Friday evening.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Becket Center Cemetery, Becket, Mass.
