BENNINGTON -- Kelly A. Wright, 40, wife of Bennington County State’s Attorney William D. Wright, a resident of Stocklee Lane, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 22, 2004 at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation surrounded by her family and close friends.

Born in Stamford, Conn., Nov. 6, 1963, she was the daughter of John F. Smith and Constance (Wisehart) Smith. She received her early education in the Darien, Conn. schools and was a 1981 graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington.

Kelly was a 1985 graduate of Trinity College in Winooski where she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work. While at Trinity, Kelly was an outstanding member of the women’s varsity tennis team. In her sophomore year, she was named the Team’s Most Valuable Player.

For more than 13 years she was employed by the state of Vermont, initially with the Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services as a child abuse investigator and later with the Department of Corrections as a probation officer. She also worked with Friends in Adoption.

Bill and Kelly were married at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington on Feb. 13, 1993.

A member of the Second Congregational Church, Kelly taught church school there and also served on the board of Christian education. She had been active in the parent group at Sacred Heart School.

Kelly had been an active volunteer in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life program in Bennington, where she had served on the steering committee.

An active outdoors person, she coached youth soccer in the Bennington recreation league and enjoyed playing volleyball, hiking and biking. She enjoyed quiet times at home with her family. Kelly was also an avid reader.

Survivors include her husband, William D. Wright and daughter Alexis K. Wright of Bennington; her mother, Constance M. Smith of Bennington; her father, John F. Smith of West Glover; two brothers, Gavin Smith, his wife Christiane of Puyallup, Wash., and Casey Smith and his fiancé Marie Grande, of Bennington; several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Second Congregational Church on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mary Lee Clark, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
