Kenneth R. Smith 1930 - 2008 BENNINGTON Kenneth R. Smith, age 77, a resident of Buck Hill Road in Arlington, Vt., died on Wednesday evening, Nov. 12, 2008 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 23, 1930, in Bennington, son of R. Emmett and Edith Walker Smith. Ken received his education in Arlington, Schools and is a graduate of Arlington Memorial High School in the class of 1948. He was an Aircraft spotter during World War II, gathering 2500 hours of service. He is a veteran of the Navy and served four years 1950 to 1954 aboard the USS Stoddard DD 566 during the Korean Conflict. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Ken married the former Grace Stasieczko on May 1, 1954, at Holy Trinity Church in Danby, Vt. Mrs. Smith survives. He was appointed Vermont Co-Apprentice "Tool and Die Maker' of the year in 1957, while employed at Mack Molding Co. in Arlington, Vt. Over the years Ken was employed at the Watervliet Arsenal, in Watervliet, N.Y., Union Carbide Corp in Bennington, Eveready Battery Corp in Bennington, retiring after 25 years, and most recently employed at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington. Ken is a Past President of the Arlington Community Club, Arlington Volunteer Fire Company, The Arlington Memorial High School Alumni Association, The New England Association of Fire Instructors. He is member of St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Arlington, Vt. He is Past Chairman of St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church Parish Council, and Past chief of the Arlington Volunteer Fire Company. Ken is a Life Member of the Arlington Volunteer Fire Company having served sixty years, and a Life Member of the Vermont State Fire Fighters Association. Ken also is a member of the New England Association of Fire chiefs. For 25 years, he was a Vermont State Fire Instructor from 1969 until 1994, teaching from the Canadian Border to Southern Vermont. He is also a member of the Arlington Townscape Organization, the American Legion Post #69 of Arlington and a Past Director of the Arlington Rescue Squad. Besides his wife, he leaves four children: Judith and Kevin Fitzpatrick of Burnt Hills, N.Y., Joyce and Douglas Snow of Oakland, Maine, Paula and Brian Masterson of Florence, Italy, and Kenneth John and Melissa Smith of Arlington, Vt. He leaves eight grandchildren; David and Shawn Fitzpatrick, Dustin and Nathan Snow, James and Katie Masterson and Maggie and Gracie Smith. He also has one brother Alton J. Smith of Norwell, Mass., Sisters; Joan Smith Knox of Holyoke, Mass., and Cynthia Smith Knox of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by one brother. Robert E. Smith. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday morning at St. Margaret Mary's Church in Arlington at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Columban's Cemetery in Arlington.
