Kenneth Smith Sr. 1927 - 2008 MANCHESTER CENTER Kenneth Valentine Smith Sr. a resident of Manchester Center, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, Au. 10, 2008, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center surrounded by his family. Born in the Bronx, N..Y, on Nov. 10, 1927, the son of George and Helen Bauer Smith, he received his early education in Bronx schools, graduating from Bronx Vocational High School . He earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he attended college at night while working a full time job. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a drill sergeant and taught basic training. During his working career, Kenneth was responsible for the electrical design for many New York buildings and hospitals. Kenneth loved woodworking, fishing, hunting, skiing, swimming and golf. He generally loved sports, and dabbled in painting, especially water colors. Kenneth was a member of the Manchester Town Planning Board, Grounds Committee member at the Southern Vermont Arts Center, and was a member of the Newcomers. He volunteered at Hildene as a greeter. He was a member of the American Legion Post 69 Arlington and, in his earlier years, volunteered for the Bromley Mountain Outing Club and was a lifeguard at City Island in New York. He leaves his wife of 53 years the former Noelle Mullan; his son Kenneth V. Smith Jr. and his wife Donna of West Hartford, Conn.; his daughters, Christine Schlicht and her husband, John, of Manlius, N.Y., and Maureen Connolly and her husband, Jim, of Medfield, Mass.; his grandchildren, Meagan Norris of Frederick, Md., Brian Schlicht of Manlius, N.Y., James and Colin Connolly of Medfield, Mass., and Tyler and Griffin Smith of West Hartford; his great-granddaughter, Madelyn Norris of Frederick, Md., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, George Smith. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Christian Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Manchester. Interment will be private. Visiting hours at BREWSTER FUNERAL SERVICE, 34 Park Place, will be Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
