Obituary Condolences

SHAFTSBURY -- Mr. Kevin John Barry, 56, a resident of Shaftsbury, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at his residence following a long illness. Kevin lived in Bennington from 1948 to 1971. In 1971, Kevin and his wife Yolanda moved to Shaftsbury where he resided until the time of his death

He was born in Bellows Falls Feb. 24, 1948. He was the son of John and Irene (Gallagher) Barry. Kevin was a graduate of the former Bennington High School.

Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted into the United States Navy and was a Navy fleet marine medic during the Vietnam War. After seeing the tragedies of war, like his dad, a veteran, he always had a good word for his fellow man or woman. He then went on to Naval Coxswain School and was reassigned to the USS Barney Destroyer as a helmsman, steering the ship around the world. This mountain boy fell in love with the high seas and the many countries which he visited. He loved to learn new languages, which made him many shipmates.

In 1971, he married the former Yolanda Myers of Shaftsbury. She is the daughter of Charles and Viola Myers.

At the age of 7, after breaking a neighbor’s window with a toy airplane, he started a lawn mowing, snow removal business to pay for its repair. This landscaping, land-clearing business continued to the age of 54, when cancer and heart disease forced him to finally stop.

He was an avid woodsman, hiking, camping, hunting and canoeing in his beloved Green Mountains. He photographed and videotaped its many animals, birds and eagles. From the age of 2, along with his dad and family, he was an avid skier. Kevin was a national senior advanced ski patrolman and a professional ski instructor. He worked winters teaching skiing at Stratton from its early days as a muddy dirt road to its current status, until ill heath forced him to stop. He could now slow down and share with his wife Yolanda, family and close friends, his mountains, gardens, cooking and laughing at his dogs.

Survivors include his wife, Yolanda Barry of Shaftsbury; his parents, John and Irene Barry of Bennington; two brothers, Dennis Barry and his wife Darlene of Bennington and Chris and Arla Barry of Bennington; a sister, Patricia Beecroft and her husband Joel of Schaghticoke, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his two daughters, Jennifer and Julie, and a son, Joey.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 9:45 a.m., with a prayer, and then from Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.

The calling hours will be private and held at the convenience of the family

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Kevin may be made to either the Bennington Area Home Health Hospice or the Jean Ryan Memorial Scholarship for Nursing through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
