Obituary Condolences

BRIDPORT -- Kurt Ax, 81, of Bridport, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 28, 2007. He was born on Aug. 31, 1926, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Joseph and Carolina (Zieglemeir) Ax.

He was a 1944 graduate of Pompton Plains High School in New Jersey. He was a WWII veteran, where he served in the Army as an interpreter in Germany. He married the former Dorothea Kayhart on May 7, 1950, in Butler, N.J.

Kurt began his working career with Pitney-Bowes in New Jersey where he remained until the move to Vermont. He moved from New Jersey to Vermont in 1965, at which time he and a partner built and opened the Northshire Motel in Manchester. He also owned and operated the Montgomery Ward catalog store, which later became Brook Valley Appliance.

Kurt was very involved with the Manchester Lions Club, an organization he joined in 1967. He was a life member and a past president of the Manchester Lions Club. He was also a life member of the VFW. Kurt enjoyed restoring antique cars and was a past president of the Garden State Antique Auto Club. He was an avid skier in his earlier years and became a boating enthusiast later in life.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothea, of Bridport; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Kurt and Barbara Ax of Manchester; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathi Carol and Chet Reed of Mansfield, Pa.; and seven grandchildren, Christopher, Joshua, Sarah and Benjamin Reed and Rachel, Morgan and Anders Ax.

Funeral services for Mr. Ax will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Manchester. The Rev. Dr. Stephen Berry will officiate. Burial will take place on Monday Oct. 8, 2007, in the First Reformed Church Cemetery in Pompton Plains, N.J.
