LaReine "Peggy" Gilbert

1922 - 2015 DORSET, VT. Dorset resident LaReine "Peggy" Gladden Gilbert died peacefully July 15, 2015, surrounded by her four children. She was 93. Peggy was born April 26, 1922, to Dr. and Mrs. Addley Hogan Gladden of New Orleans, LA. She grew up in New Orleans and graduated from Newcomb College at Tulane University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Class of 1942. She graduated from the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy in 1944. Peggy was a lifelong member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity for women. During World War II, Peggy developed the occupational therapy program at LaGarde Army Hospital in New Orleans. Later, she worked as the staff occupational therapist at New York Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. and Apostolic Christian Resthaven in Elgin, Ill. Peggy and her husband, James Holley Gilbert, reared their family in Denver, CO. and Barrington, ILL. before retiring to Dorset, where Jim's side of the family has deep roots. A loving wife, mother and friend, Peggy was the consummate volunteer. She logged 25 years with both the Southern Vermont Arts Center and Green Mountain RSVP and Volunteer Center and many years at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home. She knitted caps for foreign sailors and sweaters for local babies. She wove shawls for the infirm and baked bread for friends and strangers. She helped with the Dorset Church rummage sale, Hospice Respite Care, Faith in Action and Neighbor to Neighbor. Hostess of Guy Fawkes Day and Mardi Gras parties, Peggy published her own cookbook in 2006. Peggy is survived by her children, Ken (Peggy) of Dallas, Tx., Holley of Vancouver, Wa., Peter (Cindy) of Montpelier, Anne (Al) of Oberlin, Oh.; grandchildren, Allen, Blair, Jimmy, Carolyn, Julia and Tamzen; exchange student son, Jean-Pierre Sautereau (Francoise) and daughters, Elodie, Delphine and Aurelie of France; sisters-in-law, Mary Sue Gladden of Cumming, GA. and Elizabeth Gilbert of Dorset; niece, Susan Atkins (Jerry) of Dahlonega, GA., nephews, David (Kathy) of Metarie, LA. and Philip (Nancy) of Wallace, N.C.; and seven great and great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and brother, Addley H. Gladden Jr. Peggy's family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Equinox Terrace in Manchester for the expert and loving care she received in her last months. SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert.
