Larry Mears, Sr.

1939 - 2009 BENNINGTON, VT Beloved husband, Dad, and Poppa Larry Mears, Sr., entered into eternal peace in the arms of the Lord, Nov. 23, 2009, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Bennington on Sept. 17, 1939, son of the late Lewis and Irene Sweet Mears, Larry received his education in Manchester and Bennington Schools.

Larry worked many years for the North Adams Cemetery Department. He was the first employee of the Bennington Pottery hired by David Gill. At the time of his retirement, he enjoyed mowing lawns and working at Stewart's Shops.

In early years he enjoyed many days fishing and hunting with his grandfather, the late Earnest Mears of Manchester. After his children and grandchildren arrived, he enjoyed many good times fishing and camping with them and his wife. He also enjoyed playing guitar and banjo with his dad and friends.

Larry was a very private, kind, loving man, who cherished his family above all else.

He leaves his wife of 42 years, Loretta Maynard Mears, of Bennington; two sons and a daughter, Larry L. Mears, Jr. and his wife, Della, of Bennington, Lyle Mears and his wife, Linda, of Petersburgh, N.Y., and his baby girl, Cindy Marie Randall, and her husband, Kim, of Walloomsac, N.Y.; his eight grandchildren, Alicia Randall, Cindy Randall, Matthew Mears, Autumn Mears, Ryan Mears, Austin Mears, Bradley Mears, and Charles Mears. He also leaves three sisters, April Bergen of North Adams, Mass., Pauline Monroe of Bennington and Sally Collett of Bennington.

Larry was predeceased by three brothers, Roy Mears, Earnest (Sonny) Mears and Charles Mears.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at 12 noon at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main Street in Bennington, with the Reverend Thomas Azar officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center or the through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, Vermont 05201.
