Obituary Condolences

WATERBURY CENTER -- Laura Lucy Hunter, 82, of Prospect Street, Bennington, passed away in the comfort of her family on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Born in Waterbury on March 3, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Roy A. and Helen M. (Sullivan) Hunter.

Laura attended school and lived at the Brandon Training School during her youth. While living at Brandon, she took great pride in helping with the babies that resided there too. She later returned to the family homestead in Waterbury Center to assist in the care of her mother.

For over 30 years Laura made her home with the Hodgeman family in Proctorsville, and more recently in Petersburg N.Y. Throughout the years, she was a member of the Assembly of God Church in both Proctorsville and Petersburg, was a volunteer for a supportive workplace in Springfield, and was a long-time member of the Day Break Program in Cohoes N.Y. In her leisure time, Laura enjoyed singing and playing the piano, crocheting afghans for all of her family, playing Bingo, doing puzzle books, and flying with her friend Jack, often taking in the fall foliage. For the past five years she has resided at the Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington.

Everyone that Laura met became her friend. Her boundless capacity to love and care drew family and friends to her. Although she never had children of her own, she took an active role in her nieces and nephews lives; no one lacked a sledding or coloring partner with Aunt Laura around and no family pet lacked for a hug or a wrapped present on special occasions. Laura had a strong belief in God and did her best to live true to her Christian ideals.

Laura is survived by her longtime companions and caregivers, Jack and Sylvia Hodgeman of Petersburg N.Y.; her sister-in-law, Mary J. Hunter of Waterbury; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by a sister, Julia Sumner, and a brother, Roy George Hunter.

A celebration of Laura’s life will be held graveside from the Waterbury Center Cemetery on July 7, 2007, at 1 p.m. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers would be appreciated to the Prospect Nursing Home Activities Fund, PO Box 878, North Bennington VT 05257. The Perkins-Parker Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waterbury is assisting the family.
