Laura Meehan Obituary
Laura J. Meehan

1953 - 2015 NORTH BENNINGTON North Bennington resident Laura Jean Meehan, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, September 19 surrounded by her loving family, in Albany, NY. Laura was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 13, 1953, to Alice and Gerard Hanrahan, the oldest of six children. She met her husband, Harold, a veteran of the Viet Nam War, in 1979 and they fell in love while walking on the beach at the Breezy Point Surf Club. They continued living in Brooklyn after their marriage until 2009. Laura attended the Grace Institute, which had a business relationship with B. Altman and Co. of New York City making it possible for Laura to be placed at B. Altman in an entry level position while continuing her education at The Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. She worked her way up through the years to top buyer for the stationery department. Upon the closing of B. Altman, she went to work for Hallmark, becoming their New England territory supervisor. Laura was always a sharp dresser. She had an instinct for accessorizing with scarves, jewelry, jackets and color invariably presenting with style. She also loved entertaining, occasionally referred to as the "Pearl Mesta of Bennington County." Her home was always decorated for the seasons and candles were everywhere. Her love of family was her motivation for her generosity. If anyone needed help she was there. Her giving spirit led her to join the Norshaft Lions Club where she continued to help energize folks in the community to help one another. One of her greatest achievements was the conception of the now very popular Oktoberfest, an event so successful that after the first two years at the Park McCullough House the venue was changed to the larger site at Colgate Park. Laura loved to cook and entertain. The larger the party, the better. A visitor would shuck their shoes at the door and enjoy an afternoon of laughter, good food, drinks, and good company. There is a pillow in her living room that says, "Friends are family one finds along the way." That certainly was Laura's heart felt philosophy. And, that's the way all of her friends remember her. Laura is survived by her devoted husband, Harold T. Meehan and their children, Alyson Meehan, David (Nicole) Meehan; granddaughter; her mother; siblings; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Predeceased by her loving father and brother. Relatives, extended family and the communities she touched will miss her.
