POWNAL -- Lawrence Allen Chaffee, 87, lifelong resident of Pownal, died Saturday evening, Nov. 1, 2003 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington where he had lived for the past few years.

Mr. Chaffee was born in Pownal on June 27, 1916. He was the son of Ira Allen and Goldie Morgan (Young) Chaffee. He received his early education in Pownal schools and was a graduate of the former Bennington High School.

A World War II Army veteran, he served his country from 1941 until 1945; he was a member of a combat team aboard the USAT President Coolidge, which he survived the sinking of the ship on Oct. 26, 1942. He received many medals for his military participation, including the Purple Heart.

Mr. Chaffee had worked at the former General Cable Company in Pownal for many years from which he retired. He had been a longtime and very active member of the Pownal Center Community Church. His interests included birds and growing plants.

He leaves two sons, Norman Chaffee of Pownal and Conrad Chaffee of Dudley, Mass.; a brother, Earl Chaffee of Dallas; two grandchildren, Scott Chaffee and Wendy Karhan; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Emma Bell (Murray) Chaffee and two daughters, Diane and May Cindy Chaffee.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Pownal Center Community Church with the Rev. Eugene Kemp, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Chaffee family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.

Should friends desire, memorial gifts in memory of Mr. Chaffee may be made to either the Pownal Center Community Church or the Pownal Rescue Squad in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington VT 05201.
