Lawrence C. Smith

1913-2010 BENNINGTON Lawrence C. Smith, 96, formerly a resident of Union Street in Bennington, passed away peacefully Friday evening, April 9, 2010, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y. on June 19, 1913, the son of Floyd R. and Jane Curtiss Smith, Lawrence received his early education in Charlottesville, Va., attended South Kent Prep School and graduated from Hamilton College, class of 1936.

Lawrence was a veteran of WWII. He served his country in the Army Air Corps., where he saw action in the Asiatic Theatre.

Lawrence married the former Dorothy Mae Davis, on June 21, 1942, in Kingston, N.Y. Mrs. Smith passed away April 4, 1998.

In his early years, Lawrence worked as a credit reporter for Dun and Bradstreet out of their New York City office for five years, and then worked as a sales representative in Northern New England for the H.J. Heinz Corporation for 32 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington, where he taught Sunday school for 32 years and tutored for 10 years at the Cora B. Whitney School as part of the R.S.V. P. Program.

Lawrence enjoyed participating in various sports. His passion was for the sport of tennis, where he played at the college level as his school's number two player. He loved playing hockey, cross country skiing in his later years, golf, hiking and played football in prep school.

Lawrence leaves his son, Lawrence C. Smith Jr. of Hudson, N.H.; his daughters, Deborah Kudzia and her husband, John, of Wappinger Falls, N.Y., Susan Bourget and her husband, Ronald, of Shrewsbury, Mass.; his son-in-law, Walt Chattin; grandchildren, Kristin Boulanger of Millbury, Mass., and Kara Chapman of East Bridgewater, Mass.; his great-grandchildren, Lucas Boulanger, Sarah Mae Boulanger and John "Jack" Chapman; his sister-in-law, Marjorie Lacy of Sun City, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Chattin, who died Sept. 17, 2008.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A celebration of the life of Lawrence C. Smith will be held Saturday afternoon, Apr. 17, 2010, at 4 p.m. at HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT. Interment will be private. There are no visiting hours.
