Obituary Condolences

NORTH POWNAL -- Mr. Leo Francis Harris Sr., 68, a resident of Snake Hill in North Pownal, died Thursday afternoon, June 2, 2005, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness. Mr. Harris was born in North Pownal on Oct. 6,1936, he was the son of the late Louis and Georgianna (King) Harris. He grew up in North Pownal where he received his education. He was married to the former Gladys “Lorraine” Hurley in North Pownal on Jan. 28,1956. In earlier years he had been a member of the Army National Guard and had attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was a longtime employee of the Pownal Tanning Company. He had worked for many years at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center as a supervisor in the laundry department. He retired from Bennington College.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, building puzzles, playing cards, reading, watching television and good home cooking. He will be sadly missed.

Survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Gladys “Lorraine” Harris of North Pownal; two children, Leo F. Harris Jr. and his wife Janine of North Pownal, Diana Lynn Metcalf and her husband Russell of Lucerne Valley, Calif.; four sisters, Arlene Pratt and husband Lyman, Leona Miller and husband Russell, Marilyn Woodard and husband Charles all of North Pownal and Joyce Thomas and husband George of Cambridge, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, Heather, Bryan, Leo III, Amy, Eric, Racheal, Katlynn, Shara, Anne, Ryan, Megan and Mercedes; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Morgan; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Louis “Bud” Harris; a sister, Mildred Hurley; and a grandson, Micheal Metcalf.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at noon at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Frey, pastor of the Faith Christian Fellowship, officiating. Burial will follow in the Harris family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal.
