1926 - 2016 BENNINGTON Leo F. Marrs, 89, a resident of Merson St. died peacefully Monday January 25, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was born in Peabody, MA October 6, 1926. He was the son of the late John F. and Marie (Brophy) Marrs. Leo received his education in Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody High School. He later attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. A World War II veteran Mr. Marrs served in the United States Navy. He married the former Lorraine H. Gallagher on November 17, 1951. Mrs. Marrs died December 10, 2012. In earlier years Leo was employed by John Flynn and Sons as a Leather Chemist. After moving his family to Vermont Leo was employed at the Pownal Tannery as Plant Superintendent from which he retired. Following his retirement Leo volunteered his services with the International Executive Service Corporation. He and Lorraine traveled to third world countries where he consulted with the leather manufacturers. He made both physical and chemical suggestions to the plants and developed a plan on how they handled their liquid waste disposal. Leo was a sports enthusiast. He enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events. He was an avid reader and loved to play golf. He especially enjoyed spending summers at his family camp in Lincoln, ME. His family was his main interest. Survivors include his children, Paula Downs of Lee, ME, Carol Cummings and Danny of Howland, ME, Patty Moors and Danny of Lincoln, ME, Laurie Marrs of Williamstown, MA and Danny Marrs and his fiance, Christina Liff of Rochester, N.H.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; a brother, John "Jack" Marrs of Mount Pleasant, SC and a sister, Louise Long of North Andover, MA along with several nieces, nephews and cousins; His special friends and neighbors, Ryan and Heather Hassett and their children of Bennington. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Larson. SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Saturday January 30, 2016 at 2p.m. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 1p.m. until the time of the service.
