Leon J. Boutin
1914-2010 BENNINGTON Mr. Leon J. Boutin, 95, a resident of Coleville Road, Bennington, died on Jan. 19, 2010.
Born in Armagh, Quebec, Canada, Feb. 13, 1914, son of Wenceslas and Celestine Goulet Boutin, he received his education in Armagh and in Bennington. Mr. Boutin was a member of the first graduating class of Sacred Heart School in Bennington.
He served in World War II as a Staff Sergeant with the Army Air Corp.
Mr. Boutin married the former Beatrice C. Palmer at St. Patrick's Church in Wallingford, Vt. on Jan. 5, 1946.
In earlier years Mr. Boutin owned and operated a fruit stand and cabins on Northside Drive in Bennington. In 1947 he built Leon's Knotty Pine Motel at its current location, which he operated until 1972.
A deeply religious man, Leon always attributed whatever good fortune or blessings that have been bestowed upon him during his lifetime to the guidance his Catholic religion had given him.
Mr. Boutin was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus Council 307. In the mid-sixties, he served as a selectman for the town of Bennington.
An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies included skiing, hunting and driving horses with both his sleigh and buggy.
He leaves two sons, James J. Boutin of Pownal, and Joseph J. Boutin of Sunderland; two daughters, Leona D'Agnes of Kailua, Hawaii, and Mary Willette of Bennington; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Boutin was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice; a daughter, Bernadette; a grandson, Adam; six brothers and six sisters.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, from THE MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, when the family will be in attendance. The Vigil Service will be held from 4 6 p.m.

All members of Knights of Columbus Council 307 and the Rosary Society are asked to meet at the funeral home Friday evening at 5:45 for the recitation of the Rosary in memory of Mr. Boutin.
