GOULDSBORO, Maine -- Mr. Leonard Cohen, 81, a resident of West Bay Road, Gouldsboro, died Thursday evening at the Eastern Maine Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Aug. 11, 1924. He was the son of the late Max and Blanche (Sarelson) Cohen. Leonard received his education in Long Island. He later attended Columbia University where he received a bachelor’s degree and later attended M.I.T.

He married the former Alexandra Naranjo June 26, 1967 in New York City.

Mr. Cohen was a World War II veteran where he served in the U.S. Air Force.

Leonard was employed at the Pennysaver in Bennington, Vt., for 16 years. He retired in 2003. In earlier years he had worked as a tropical produce farmer in Puerto Rico and as a furrier in New York City.

Leonard and Alexandra moved to Gouldsboro in 2003. Leonard enjoyed photography, gardening, his pets and traveling. While living in Bennington, Leonard served on the Bennington School Board.

Survivors include his wife Alexdra Cohen of Gouldsboro; a daughter, Kara Cohen of Salem, Mass.; a son, Mark Cohen of Brighton, Mass.; and four children from a previous marriage. He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Cohen and a sister, Carol Siegel

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday Oct. 12, 2005, at 1 p.m. with Rabbi Howard Cohen officiating.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
