Leonard "Lenny" Farrington

1920-2015 BENNINGTON Leonard "Lenny" Farrington, 94, a resident of South Branch Street, died Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness. Born in Bennington May 30, 1920, he was the son of the late Percey and Cora (Moon) Farrington. He received his education in the Bennington schools and was a 1938 graduate of Bennington High School. Lenny was a World War II Army veteran who served in England with the 109th Hospital Division. He married the former Rita Gauthier on June 15, 1941 in Bennington. Mrs. Farrington died January 19, 2010. For many years Lenny was employed as the meat manager at the A & P grocery store in Bennington. For several years he served on the Board of Civil Authority for the town of Bennington and especially enjoyed visiting with many residents on voting day. Lenny was also a member of American Legion Post 13. In his younger years he was an avid horseshoe player and a member of the Vermont Horseshoe Hall of Fame. Lenny was one of the persons instrumental in establishing the horseshoe pits at Willow Park. He also took part in both local bowling and softball leagues as a young man and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Following retirement Lenny and Rita enjoyed traveling to various destinations. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Robert Provensal, a daughter, Carol Griffin and a daughter-in-law, Joanne Farrington, all of Bennington; nine grandchildren, Debbie Reed, Wendy Douglass, Tracy Provensal, Bonnie Kozlowski, Michelle DeCosmo, Scott Farrington and Michael, John and Eric Griffin; 13 great-grandchildren, Amie Niles, Jeremy and Jerrica Reed, Heather Huntley and Erin Douglass, Justin and Jenna Spencer, Nathan and Meghan DeCosmo, Abby and Luke Farrington and Gabrielle and Hannah Griffin; five great-great-grandchildren, Keegan and Korbin Niles, Jaxson Reed, Emery and Finleigh Burdick; two sisters-in-law, Helen Whitman and Claire Bishop, both of Bennington; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins. Len was predeceased by a son, Leo "Butch" Farrington and a son-in-law, John "Jack" Griffin. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Four Chaplains All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Chaplin Kenneth Coonradt officiating. Friends are invited to pay their respects to the family at All Faiths Chapel from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Private committal services will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
