Leonard Guy Morse

1921-2012 Leonard Guy Morse, 91, a longtime resident of Colonial Gardens Apartments in Bennington, VT died Saturday October 20, 2012 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a brief illness

He was born on March 31, 1921 in Bennington, son of the late Guy W and Ruth R Morse.

A 1939 graduate from Bennington High School where he was a student director of the band his junior and senior years. After graduation he went to work for his father, Guy W. Morse where he learned the construction business. This firm later became Morse and Butler, Inc. until 1982. In 1982 Len went to work for the Town of Bennington serving as Building Inspector and Rehabilitation Specialist with the Community Development Department until 1994. He also served on the Board of Listers from 1983 until his retirement in 1998. During World War II he served forty two months in the 144th and 319th Army Bands. He was a member of a 18 piece dance band that broadcast over WBZ Boston radio. In 1946 he organized and directed the Post 13 American Legion Band which won many awards from parades throughout New England during its five year existence. He played in several dance bands and was a music judge for 25 years for the annual Fire Departments Battle Day parade. He was past president of the Bennington Chamber of Commerce in 1971. He married the former Virginia Leone Legacy, daughter of the late Frank J and Edith B Legacy on June 29th, 1946. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in June. Len was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, Ushers Committee and was Co President of the former Couples Club.

He is survived by his wife, Virgina L. Morse of Bennington, a son Keith and daughter in law Peggy of Houston, Texas and grandchildren Gene, Susan and Keith. A nephew, Gerald Butler and wife Pricilla of Bennington and their children Scott and Mark.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held on Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 am for family and friends at Park Lawn Cemetery where Rev. Mary Lee Clark will offer the committal service.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.
