NORTH RUPERT -- Leonebel M. Connaway, 77, of North Rupert, died Monday, July 26, in Bennington.

Ms. Connaway was born in Pont-Avon, France, on June 10, 1929, the daughter of Jay H. and Louise (Boehle) Connaway. Her early years were spent living on Monhegan Island, Maine, where she, her mother and father, a renowned seascape painter, lived a simple existence.

Ms. Connaway and parents took up residency in North Rupert in 1947, when she was attending Bennington College. Dance, drama, creative writing and philosophy were interests which she enjoyed during those years, here and in New York City.

Ms. Connaway held various employment positions, ranging from a reporter for Women’s Wear Daily to a dental assistant and secretary.

While in New York, she met and married Bernard Eichen, a concert violinist.

After their divorce, Ms. Connaway returned to the family home in Vermont in 1969.

Ms. Connaway studied metaphysics with Mildred Mann, founder of the Society of Pragmatic Mysticism, worked as her secretary and eventually became the society’s director and was active in giving lectures, conducting workshops and organizing publicity.

Ms. Connaway also managed her Iate father’s art gallery in North Rupert.

Leonebel Connaway is survived by her special friend, Matthew Wolff, and his son, Dorian, of West Rupert.

A committal service for Ms. Connaway will be held at the family home in North Rupert on Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m., where friends are invited to share loving memories. There will be no calling hours. Please call Linda at 802-394-2929 for more information regarding the service.
