SHAFTSBURY -- LeRoy A. “Roy” McDermott, 64, a resident of Holy Smoke Road and formerly of Arlington, died unexpectedly Monday morning Dec. 25, 2006, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Roy was born in Bennington on Aug. 20, 1942, a son of the late James A. and Evelyn P. (Sallisky) McDermott. He grew up in Arlington where he attended local schools. Roy served in the Army as a light weapons infantryman and was a qualified sharpshooter.

He married Jeanne Thompson in Sunderland on Aug. 15,1964.

Roy had worked as a skilled stone mason and owned and operated Roy’s Masonry Inc. for 27 years until declining health would not allow him to continue. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed hunting, especially the trips to Colorado and fishing. He also loved wood carving, was a beloved father and enjoyed his grandchildren, who were a large part of his life.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 69 of Arlington. He leaves his wife of 42 years, Jeanne McDermott, of Shaftsbury; their four children, Laurie and her husband Glenn Sherman of Arlington, Billy, and his wife, Robin McDermott, of Trinidad, Colo., Roy Lee and his wife, Heidi McDermott, of Arlington and Lisa and her husband Lenny Sheridan of Bennington; his grandchildren Glenn, Dustin and Rayleen Sherman, Carah-Jo and Cody McDermott; step-grandson Craig Munson, Spencer, Jayden and Cameron McDermott; a sister, Veronica Thinkham of Arlington, a brother Rickford McDermott of Crystal River, Fla.; two half brothers, Dennis Young of Bennington and Steven Young of Connecticut; six half-sisters, Sandi Young, Regina Lynch, Karen Lombardo, Valerie MacDonald, Joanne Leifert and Michelle Young, all of Connecticut; a special great nephew, Louis Douglas and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother Harry McDermott who died Dec. 10, 2005.

Funeral services will take place on Friday afternoon Dec. 29 at 1p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in the McDermott family lot in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, Route 7A, Arlington, on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. when the family will be present.
